Golfthink DRINK
Don’t judge me! You know you enjoy adult beverages before, during or after hitting the links (or perhaps you enjoy it throughout – I know I do!).
GOLFTHINK WEEKEND DRINK
This weekend, we’re a little shy on “official” PGA activity – everyone’s gearing-up for the BMW Championship, and the many CUPS that make September an exciting month. So this week, the Golfthink Drink will take a cue from the history of the sport itself, and go SCOTTISH.
What say you, Laddie? How about a lil’ SCOTCH with that soda…?
Certainly there are any number of fine Scotches to be found. And that Golfthink typically drinks them, ‘straight’ it’s a little difficult to think about ‘assaulting’ them with any other liquid additive, but…we’ll give it a go! In fact, we’ll keep it as honest as possible & pick a Scot-leaning concoction:
Aberdeen Angus
The Recipe:
- 2 oz. Scotch
- 1 oz. Drambuie Liqueur
- 1 tbsp. Honey
- 2 tbsp. Lime Juice
HOW TO: Stir all but Drambuie in a coffee mug. Warm Drambuie, ignite it and pour the burning liqueur into the mug. Stir rapidly and drink.
(Check back – a new drink, story & recipe every Friday !)
GOLF WINES
In case you didn’t know, there are many PGA players that dabble (some much more than “dabble”) in wine. A quick list:

GOLFDRINK PAIRINGS:
GROG + FISH & CHIPS
GROG originally referred to a drink made with water or “small beer” (a weak beer) and rum, which was introduced into the Royal Navy in August 1740. Modern versions of the drink are often made with hot or boiling water, and sometimes include lemon juice, lime juice, cinnamon or sugar to improve the taste. Rum with water, sugar and nutmeg was known as bumbo and was more popular with pirates and merchantmen.
And then there are Fish & Chips – we’re NOT talking about Long John Slivers, here…eeegads…! No. A food that originated in the UK in the mid-1800′s, it has come a long way, with some unique and TASTY variations. Crunchy fish with a side of potatoes or fries – and don’t forget the Malt Vinegar (it MAKES the dish!).
THE DRINK: Traditional Navy Grog
There are only a few “accepted” forms:
THE RECIPE:
- 1/2 oz light rum
- 1/2 oz gold rum
- 1/2 oz dark rum
- 1/2 oz orange liqueur
- 1 oz grapefruit juice
- 1 oz orange juice
- 1 oz pineapple juice
- add a little cinnamon
Pour liquors into an ice-filled collins glass. Add juices, shake, and garnish with an orange wedge and pineapple chunk.
So – this week’s GOLFDRINK PAIRING : Fish & Chips and GROG. You Can NOT go wrong! CHEERS!
